Growing Through Mentorship: A Day in Cleveland

Last week, I made the drive from Northern Kentucky to Cleveland, Ohio, to spend the day with my good friend and mentor, DeMayne. We connected through Peter Hurley's Headshot Crew, and every time we get together, I walk away with new insights and a lot of inspiration.

We spent the day working on everything from lighting to posing to the art of creating genuine connection in a headshot. But it wasn't just about the technical details. What made the day truly valuable was the combination of practice, laughter, and honest feedback. There's something powerful about working with someone who both challenges you to grow and makes the process enjoyable.

That's the real beauty of mentorship. No matter how much experience you have, there's always room to keep learning, refining, and practicing. Having a mentor means you don't have to figure everything out on your own. You get the benefit of someone else's experience, perspective, and encouragement.

For me, days like this aren't just about becoming a better photographer. They're about becoming a better guide for the people who step in front of my camera. Every time I grow behind the lens, I can create a smoother, more comfortable, and more enjoyable experience for my clients.

Because at the end of the day, a great headshot isn't only about lighting or posing. It's about capturing someone at their best. And the more I learn, the better I can make that happen.
