Behind the Scenes of a Headshot Session at Deborah Heinlen Photography

If you ever wondered what it is like to be in front of the camera at Deborah Heinlen Photography, you are in the right place. Whether we are shooting at my home studio in Hebron, Kentucky or on location at your office, every headshot session is designed to be professional, relaxed, and fun.

Let’s take a peek behind the scenes of a typical session, so you know exactly what to expect when you step in front of my lens.

A Comfortable, Welcoming Environment

Most people come in a little nervous. Maybe even dreading having their photo taken. That is completely normal. That is also why I have designed my home studio to feel less like a commercial photography space and more like home.

When clients arrive at my Hebron studio, I always offer coffee, tea, or water, and we take a few minutes to talk before shooting. If I am photographing at your business, I bring that same relaxed energy with me, along with a portable version of my full studio setup.

My Gear and Lighting Setup

I shoot with a Nikon Z8 and a 70–200mm lens, always set at 92mm. That focal length gives us the most flattering and professional look for headshots. Lighting is key, and I use either a Peter Hurley-style triangle setup or a more traditional key, fill, and kick light configuration with my Westcott Flex Kit continuous LED lights.

You can check out a video of my lighting setup below for a behind-the-scenes look at how I shape professional, polished light for every session.

Real-Time Coaching and Tethered Shooting

Sessions can be completed in as little as 15 minutes or we could spend longer with a deep dive into portraiture and branding options. I will keep shooting until we know we have the images you love. I shoot tethered into Capture One, so you can see your photos in real time. This allows for immediate feedback, posing adjustments, and lots of guidance throughout the session.

Your favorite music plays in the background. (Yes, I take requests.) If you catch me dancing behind the camera, just know it is part of the creative process.

It Is More Than Just a Headshot

My style is fun, approachable, and educational. I love explaining why I ask for a certain pose or how tethered shooting helps you feel more confident. You will never be left wondering if we are getting it right, because you will see it happening live.

Whether you are an executive, an actor, a business owner, or simply need a fresh professional photo, I approach every session the same way. With care, creativity, and your best self in mind.

Image Review and Retouching

Once we have captured your best looks, we will sit down to review the images together. You will have a chance to choose your favorites on the spot. If you want to take time to make selections you will receive an online proofing gallery to review images in your own time. I will then retouch the images and send them in a final, online gallery. Images are retouched to bring out the real you including color adjustments if needed, blemish removal, stray hair touch ups, among others. Nothing fake. Nothing overdone.

Ready to See Yourself at Your Best?

A great headshot does not just happen. It is created with intention, lighting, coaching, and laughter. When you are ready to refresh your professional image, I would love to walk you through it, step by step.

Contact me today to schedule your session or ask any questions. I will take care of the rest.
